Because they should be seen
I'm just going through some people I watch and digging up stuff of those that I don't think have enough people watching them for what potential they have.

What's the big deal with faves?

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 13, 2008, 3:17 PM

Something I was thinking, why do some people care so much about favorites?

I see so many artists complain about no one commenting when they fave, sometimes kind of aggressively things like 'don't bother faving unless you comment' and I really wonder what all the fuss is about.

Sure, it's nice to know -why- someone faved something, but I mean, will it really hurt you or your art if they never comment? For example, I'm a rather busy person and yes, I will fave things without commenting, why? Many reasons.
Either I'm too busy to think of a comment at the time, but I would like to make note of the piece either to share with others or maybe to comment on later, or sometimes I just can't think of anything worth saying than 'that's awesome!' or something to that effect, which I feel really isn't worth posting (since so many artists I see complain about -that- too ¬_¬ )

I mean seriously, be reasonable, I say. And sure, some people fave your doodles and sketches, frustrating when you have a piece you spent hours on that barely gets a comment or a fave. Sure it baffles me too but, it happens. I appreciate what I get even if they're one word comments or a fave, for a watch with no comments or faves at all. I mean, look at it this way, you could get nothing at all.

Anywho, it was just on my thoughts, it was something that was bothering me.

In other news, I've been trying to do more traditional pieces, I haven't touched my colored pencils and markers in some time, so I wanted to work with them. Also, I lub pixel art.

Blaaah they're just attention whores who want more ass kisses. A fav is a complement, take it or leave it. D|

I can see if from both sides of the river.
You are right, people are busy and that the artists should feel content that you as the viewer did feel their work was 'worthy' enough for you to press that little button (Add to favourites).

However, they aren't mind readers either, and over time if you gain so many favourites with no comments then you feel as an accessory rather than part of a community because you aren't gaining any interaction with these people who has made that initial form of connection with you (i.e. by adding your work to their favourites).

It's abit of a consequential scenerio here. It's up to the artist how high the percentage of comments compared to the number of favourites (the gallery overall) the artist can see "This isn't enough" or "I'm happy with this ^3^"

I personally make an effort to say a comment when I favourite a piece, but I don't hold a grudge against someone who just favourites one of mine with no comment.

Could not agree more. A fav is a comment in itself I think.

I try to comment when I know I have something constructive to say, or if I see improvement in something, otherwise I feel like there's no point. I know a lot of others feel the same

And to be honest, I don't look to DA for technical advice >_> so I guess that's another reason why it doesn't bother me.

I consider a fave to be akin to a comment like 'oh neat'/'awesome' ect as well

if you look at other favourites the favouriteer has favourited, you'll probably figure out reason enough why they favourited what they did.

i have way too many favs on my lina inverse colouring and inuyasha avatar which are decades old simply because the people like collecting favs of their favourite characters to see fanart of... but ohwell.

I often times favorite somthing without commenting because

A) I don't know what to say that hasn't already ben said

B) I'm internet shy

C) For me, favoriteing is the equivalent of giving a complament for me.
